POAC Funding

POAC aligns its funding with the best practice recommendations contained within the Auckland Regional HealthPathways. Multi-resistant organisms are an increasing problem in NZ, particularly in the Auckland area, and POAC funding supports GPs to manage these infections in the community where appropriate, rather than referring the patient to hospital.

Fosfomycin

Fosfomycin is no longer funded under POAC. From 1 November 2024, Pharmac funds fosfomycin (branded UroFos) in the community for urinary tract infections — see the Pharmac notice for details. It is available from community pharmacies in the usual way, at no cost to POAC.

Pivmecillinam

Pivmecillinam is an oral, penicillin-class antibiotic used mainly to treat uncomplicated bacterial urinary tract infections. POAC will fund Pivmecillinam where recommended by a specialist (Infectious Diseases Consultant or Clinical Microbiologist) — refer to the updated Auckland HealthPathway:

• If referred by GP, submit a POAC referral in the usual manner.
• Add the POAC case number to the prescription.
• The hospital can generate a POAC case number using the referral form.
• The drug is to be collected by the patient from the hospital pharmacy.
• If referred from the community and the patient is unable to travel, email referral@poac.co.nz to request delivery.
